Assignment 1 - Sarah Akers

What is your earliest memory of reading? My earliest memories of reading are definitely at Story Time at the Sherrills Ford Public Library. My mom took my sister and I there every week from the time I was about 18 months old. It is crazy, but I met people there, as a two year old, that I am still close friends with today!

Who read to you? Did they read to you often? I can remember my parents reading to me, especially my mom. She stayed home with us until we went to school so we had a lot of time together. Her, Beth (my sister), and I would all three sit in my parents’ bed and read together.

What was your favorite book as a child? As a child, my favorite books were Dr. Seuss books. When I was a little older I can remember enjoying books by Judy Blume. I also liked the Goosebumps series.

Did you ever discover, love, and devour an entire series of books? I loved the Harry Potter series. When a new book would come out in the series, my sister and I would both sit and read the book in as close to one sitting as possible!

Did you like to read as a child? Was reading a joy or a struggle? As a child, I loved to read. It was never really a struggle for me, but if a book were assigned for me to read in school, I would never enjoy it quite as much as one I had picked on my own.

Did your teachers read aloud regularly? What books did they read? I can remember my early elementary school teachers reading aloud to us. I especially remember my 3rd grade teacher reading James and the Giant Peach to us, which I loved.

Did a book ever make a difference in your life? I don’t know if it made a difference in my life, but Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad really made me look at life and history differently.

Do you choose to read for pleasure now? I love to read whenever I have time… but I do choose to read books with virtually no “literary merit”, just fun ones! The last books I read were Something Borrowed and Something Blue by Emily Giffin.

  1. I forgot about the Judy Blume books. There was always a waiting list at my elementary school for her books. I had to wait two months to get Are YOu There God, Its Me Margaret.

  3. I plan to take Nolan to the library too for story time because I think it will be fun for him to hear some else read and to see other kids there. I'm trying to make reading fun for him because I didn't get that chance. I can't believe you can remember that far back.

  4. Goosebumps!! OMG I totally forgot about those! I loved those books. I think it was mainly because they reminded of Halloween...of course my fave holiday! I liked Judy Blume too. This class and these blogs are definitely bringing back memories! (some good...some bad!)
