Assignment 1 - Amy Canterbury

What is your earliest memory of reading?
My earliest memory of reading was finding a book in the classroom. The label on the book was beneficial. The labels allowed us to identify if the book was appropriate for us. Everybody’s reading level was different. The labels did not embarrass anyone. Everybody took a book home in a plastic bag. I remember sitting with my mother to read my chosen book. She would provide help if I needed assistance. I would bring home different books throughout the year. The class would get stickers on their reading card from “The Book It” program. Everybody would receive a free personal pan pizza coupon from Pizza Hut when they read so many books. I felt proud of reading to gain a pizza. The pizza was little like me. I did not have to share my pizza with anyone. The pizza was as an incentive that made me feel accomplished.

Who read to you? Did they read to you often?
My mother read to me often. She used to read the tiny Christmas books to me. We still have those books. We hang them as ornaments on the Christmas tree. Barbie books were another favorite of mine. My mother and I would have discussions about the books. She would slide her finger under the words as she read to me.

What was your favorite book as a child?
I was interested in government and politics in fourth grade. I used to go to the library all the time to pick up historical biographies. The name of the book does not come to mind; however, I read a lot of books with information about Abraham Lincoln. Historical books made me appreciate the government and leaders of our country. I would always run to the biographic and historical section of the library first. My love for politics has remained. I still read the newspaper often to become aware of current events in the world.

Did you ever discover, love, and devour an entire series of books?
My parents purchased a few Dr. Seuss books for me. Dr. Seuss made me love words. I thought the wackiest word was better than simple words. Dr. Seuss gave me confidence because he was able to make up words. I liked spelling too. I did not feel bad if I misspelled a word since my misspelling could be considered a Dr. Seuss word. Dr. Seuss gave me freedom by using his imagination for his books.

Did you like to read as a child? Was reading a joy or a struggle?
I liked to read. Reading and getting books was a joyous experience for me. I enjoyed going to the library. I could spend countless hours appreciating books. I am thankful that my teachers and parents encouraged reading. Reading is a productive hobby. I like being able to check out different books and return them to sample various topics. Reading helped me grow as an individual. Books introduced new places, people, and thoughts to me.

Did your teachers read aloud regularly? What books did they read?
My teachers always read out loud from elementary to high school. I remember my fourth grade teacher reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My eighth grade teacher read Animal Farm to the class. My eleventh grade teacher read The Adventures of Huck Finn aloud. I enjoyed the teacher reading to the class. I could focus on the story better. I did not have to stress about being call on to read a passage.

Did a book ever make a difference in your life?
Math was displeasing to me. I checked out the M&M addition and subtraction books. I read the books outside. I used to love to read outside under the tree. I got a bowl full of M&Ms. I used the M&Ms to execute the math examples as I read the books. Those books made math tolerable to me. Math would be better if they made more books using food to explain mathematical concepts to students. Kids would be able to process the information faster since they can touch, see, and eat the food.

Do you choose to read for pleasure now?
I currently read short stories instead of novels due to my busy schedule. Short stories can be very powerful. I can receive the same amount of fulfillment with a short story as I do with a novel. I have gotten interested with American literature. I adore the imagery of Fitzgerald. I am mesmerized by his style of writing. Newspapers are important to me. I always take time to read local and national news. Any type of reading can be beneficial. Newspapers are also a quick way to get informed. I have started collecting newspapers. There are many amazing events occurring. I would like to save them to share with future generations.

Did a book ever make a difference in your life? I don’t know if it made a difference in my life, but Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad really made me look at life and history differently.

Do you choose to read for pleasure now? I love to read whenever I have time… but I do choose to read books with virtually no “literary merit”, just fun ones! The last books I read were Something Borrowed and Something Blue by Emily Giffin.

assignment 1

My earliest memory of reading was in kindergarten. My teachers read to me only as much as they needed to. I loved the Franklin series, Aurthur series, but I really liked the Eye Spy books. I have had a hard time finding books that I really enjoy so I have not found a series that I love yet. I kind of liked to read as a child. I enjoyed funny stories, but I didn't really like the Black Lagoon series. Reading has always been a struggle for me. I think it was because the only help I could receive was at school. The Giving Tree really made difference in my life. It made me more appreciative because of it's sacrifices. I read for pleasure if I can find a book that I really enjoy. The books must flow smoothly and have a good pace. Anaid

She has always read to the granchildren now that she has more time. She says now that she wishes she had made time to read to us. I can't remember a favorite childhood book. The one book I remember the most is Jack Tales. In my elementary school we had a story teller who would come in and tells us the stories why acting them out. I have discoverd and loved several series. My favorite type of books are series books. I always want to know what happens next. I fall in love with the characters and never want the stories to end. I have always loved to read. By the time I was in middle school I was reading adult books. My freshman year in high school I read The Pillars of the Earth. It was one of the hardest books to read, but I finished and loved it. One of my instructors was reading the book later in the semester and we discussed the book. He was surprised to find that I had read it. I did learn somethings about the book I had misunderstood. I can remember that all through school until I graduated my instructors read to me from various books. They would choose a book that they liked which matched the curriculum and read aloud. Sometimes it was group reading, but someone was always reading. The book I can remember that made the biggest difference in my life was the Left Behind Series. I was hooked from page one and in tears through most of the book. It changed the way I viewed my life and the choices I made. I read all of the time for pleasure. Assignment.1 Holly Annas

I do not have a regular access to email so I did not know about this assignment until today. I will try to respond to the questions that I can in my limited time at work.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF READING?
My earliest memory of reading would have to be having my mom read Clifford books to me when I was just tiny. She absolutely loved these books and continued to read them to me until I got old enough to read them to myself. My first story that I personally read all by myself was the itsy bitsy spider. I remember reading it while following along with my pointer finger in the first grade.

WHO READ TO YOU? DID THEY READ TO YOU OFTEN?
As I said before my mom read to me and my dad did as well. They always read me a bedtime story and would read anytime I asked them to. I loved it. I still like stories read to me at the age of 23.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK AS A CHILD?
My favorite book had to be The Pokey Little Puppies I just thought that the puppies were adorable in that book, and when my daddy read it to me he made voices for all the characters and I loved it!

DID YOU EVER DISCOVER, LOVE, AND DEVOUR AN ENTIRE SET OF BOOKS?
I would have to say that there have been many of those such discoveries in my life. Of course Clifford was my first, then Curious George, The Berstein Bears, Ms. Piggle Wiggle, Goosebumps somewhat

DID YOUR TEACHERS READ ALOUD REGULARLY? WHAT DID THEY READ?
I can remember some of my teachers reading aloud to me and it was different books. Some read parts of novels to us each day, and others would have a book a day they read after lunchtime.

DID A BOOK EVER MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE?
Well I can't say that I remember early books making a difference in my life. The book about the mean substitute that was actually the teacher scared me of substitutes for a small portion of my early school years. It wasn't until later years when I started reading books such as Night or A Child Called It that made me realize that there were other children in the world that didn't have a life like mine.

DO YOU CHOOSE TO READ FOR PLEASURE NOW?
It depends. If I am in a reading mood then I will read any and everything I get my hands on then I take spells where I don't read at all. It all depends on my mood.

My earliest memory of reading is of my mother reading to me every night before bed, which she did for years. I always enjoyed that so much; it was a sort of bonding time between her and I. It instilled a deep love for books in me which I still have today. Two of my favorite books as a child were Where the Wild Things are, by Maurice Sendak and Are you my mother?, by P.D. Eastman. I think the second one was one of my favorites because my mom read it to me and it was about a little bird trying to finding his mother. I bought both of these books as an adult and read them to my little girl before bed along with many more of my favorites. As a child two of the book series that I loved and read were the Junie B. Jones and the Ramona sets. As an adult I tend to read and enjoy books that are in a series rather than books that are a singular work. Some such books are Steven King's Dark Tower series, Orson Scott Card's Ender series, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and Charlain Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries. As a child and in adulthood reading has always been a relaxing hobby of mine that I love and cherish; it has always been a joy not a chore. My teachers read aloud in school often but I can not remember many specific books being read aloud other than The Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle, Harold and the Purple Crayon, by Crockett Johnson, and The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende. I think most of the teachers I had either read from textbooks or expected us to read things on our own. Books make a huge difference in my life. I've always been able to sort of "escape" into a book, imagining myself as the characters or off in those far away fanciful lands such as what is found in The Neverending Story. I read for pleasure everyday; I bring books to work and read at home before bed. When someone asks me what my hobbies are, reading is always high on the list.

Assignment 1

What is your earliest memory of reading?

My earliest memory of reading has to be when I learned to read in kindergarten. Ever since then, I have loved reading. Books have always been a great escape for me.

Who read to you?

My mom and my grandmother read to me when I was very young, probably since I was around 2 years old. They would constantly read bedtime stories to me and when I was a few years older they would read me books that were too hard for me to read at that point.

What was your favorite book as a child?

My favorite book when I was a child was called Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. I thought that book was so entertaining and it is still one of my favorites. Another one I always loved was Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. It is a collection of goofy poems and I checked it out constantly from the library.

Did you ever discover, love, and devour an entire series of books?

I have read and fallen in love with 2 different book series. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer is one of them. I was reluctant to read them at first, but once I started them, I could not put them down. Another is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I had the same experience I had with the Twilight Saga with these books. I could not stop reading them. I have read each of these multiple times because I love them so much.

What did you like to read as a child? Was reading a joy or a struggling?

I always loved reading as a child. The books that I always gravitated towards were very funny and witty. I liked books that kept me entertained with unique characters. I loved reading until I had to do Accelerated Reading in middle school, and then it became a struggle for me because I felt like A.R. took all of the fun out of reading for me because it became more of a chore rather than a form of entertainment.

Did your teachers read aloud regularly? What books did they read?

My teachers constantly read books to me in class. They also encouraged us to read aloud in class as well. The type of books they read were usually very descriptive and entertaining so that we would really pay attention to the story being told.

Did a book ever make a difference in your life?

2 books have impacted my life in a major way. One is called A Child Called It by David Pelzer. It was very hard to read because you feel so many emotions while reading it and it makes you feel very fortunate about things and people that you have in your life that you make not appreciate as much as you should. Another is called 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. This book really increased my sense of faith and belief. It was a very inspiring story to read.

Do you choose to read for pleasure now?

Yes. I read constantly because I find it very relaxing and insightful.

Assignment 1 / Ashley Wall

My earliest memory of reading is a bit fuzzy. Although my mother said she read to me all the time, I cannot remember any specific occasion. I know I was read to, and learned to read, in school but I can't pull anything from memory that was special to me. My earliest memory would be reading alone on my bed in my room. I read to myself, and didn't mind doing so. I fell in love with the Boxcar Children, Babysitters Club, and Goosebumps. Each of which I discovered, loved, and devoured. I loved to read and didn't struggle with it. My teachers did read aloud regularly, but unfortunately nothing stands out. I loved reading independently and most of my reading memories consist of this. Many books have impacted my life. Recently I've read Angela's Ashes and was so consumed with it that I actually read with an Irish accent (yes, in my head). I prolonged the last few pages for days just so the book wouldn't end. Fortunately I found Frank McCourt's sequel T'is shortly after so I didn't have to "quit cold turkey." I read for pleasure now quite often. I always have a book I'm reading. Some books take longer to read depending on the amount of time I can devote to leisurely activities.

Welcome!

Welcome to RE 3240! I am eager to get to know you as we explore children's literature together. I look forward to watching this blog fill and spill over with your thoughts and words.

Give Me a Book

Give me a book and long tall grass,
There will I look as the hours pass.
To other places I can see;
To other faces strange to me.

In black and white they fill my head
With men and women~ vanished, dead~
Of hope and fear, of wish and need.

The world stands still.
I, breathless, read.
And in their history I see
The untold mystery of me.
